September is National Preparedness Month

September 2016 marks the 12-year anniversary of National Preparedness Month, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

National Preparedness Month was created to encourage and inspire citizens to make essential preparations at home and at the office in the event of a natural disaster, national emergency, or terrorist attack.

This entails, among other things, deciding on when and where your family will meet up if you are in different places at the time, having emergency supplies boxed up and ready for transport, and making arrangements for your pets as well.

Last year’s theme was so successful that FEMA has decided to repeat it again this year. “ ‘Don’t Wait, Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today,’ will be returning for this September with a continuing emphasis on preparedness for youth, older adults, and people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs.”

Visit www.ready.gov/september to learn more about how you can prepare, how to become a volunteer or leader in your community, access webinars and other educational materials, and download social media logos and hash tags.

Additionally, the Dallas Office of Emergency Management and Dallas CERT, Inc. have joined forces to bring you the 2016 Dallas Emergency Preparedness Extravaganza to be held on Saturday, September 24th from 11 am to 3 pm at the Ronald Kirk Bridge and the Felix H. Lozada, Sr. Gateway.

Fair events include an opportunity to meet and talk with Dallas Police and Fire Response Personnel and to learn more about the agencies that provide disaster relief to our communities. Attendees will also have the opportunity to build their own preparedness kit, participate in other educational events, and even win prizes.

Local public, private, and nonprofit business and organizations will also be present to assist Dallas citizens with preparing for emergencies. Major sponsors of this event include Target, Home Depot, and Motorola Solutions, among others.
